An out-and-back course from the high-altitude town of Leadville, Colorado. It crosses Hope Pass (about 3,800 m) twice, on the way out to the Winfield turnaround and on the way back. Known as the Race Across the Sky, it began in 1983 to bring attention to the town after its mine closed.
The course tops out at 3,821 m (low point 2,806 m). 5 climbs of 300 m or more keep coming; the biggest is 1,015 m around 67–74 km. The longest descent drops 1,016 m around 94 km at about 15% on average. About 60% of the distance is gentle (under 5% grade), so there is a lot of running. In 2025, 54% of starters finished — a tough one. The median finish was about 29 h, through one night.
