The 13 km category starts at Zozan Shrine in Matsushiro, Nagano City, loops over Mt. Zozan, Mt. Kurabone, Mt. Amagi and Mt. Saijo, and finishes at the Matsushiro Castle ruins. It starts at 10:30, two hours after the long course, with one aid station at the Saijosan car park (about 6 km).
The course tops out at 813 m (low point 350 m). The main climb comes right from the start: 456 m around 0–3 km. Only about 20% is gentle (under 5% grade); most of it is climbing or descending. The median finish was about 2 h.
