The 31 km category starts and finishes at the Utopia Saioto ski area in Kitahiroshima, Hiroshima, running through the autumn colours of the western Chugoku mountains. The course is 90% trail, with cutoffs at the Saioto community hall and Kitao Pass.
The course tops out at 1,143 m (low point 626 m). There are 2 big climbs: 418 m around 0–4 km; 376 m around 15–19 km. Only about 30% is gentle (under 5% grade); most of it is climbing or descending.
