The 52 km category starts and finishes at the Utopia Saioto ski area in Kitahiroshima, Hiroshima, running through the autumn colours of the western Chugoku mountains. The course is 87% trail and is certified by the Japan Skyrunning Association, with three cutoffs. Finishers are served Saioto curry.
The course tops out at 1,215 m (low point 614 m). There are 4 big climbs: 400 m around 0–4 km; 386 m around 15–19 km; 395 m around 26–28 km; 518 m around 42–48 km. Only about 20% is gentle (under 5% grade); most of it is climbing or descending.
